New Bird Species at My Feeder

April 13, 2007 / by whereabouts

I just saw a new bird species at my feeder a couple of minutes ago and that is the Red-Breasted Nuthatch.  See picture below.  It is a cute little bird that clings to the tree and pecks at the bark like a woodpecker but it also feeds at the feeder.

How exciting!

Really a pretty bird. I don't think we have those here in Oklahoma.[THUMBUP][HEART]

No, they're not in your area. Their habitat is coniferous forest. They breed across Canada from southeastern Alaska, Manitoba, and Newfoundland south to southern California, Arizona, Great Lakes region, and northern New England, and south in Appalachians to North Carolina. They winter in their breeding range and irregularly south to Gulf Coast and northern Florida. Their main source of food is the seeds of conifers, and in years when the seed supply fails in the North, they move south in large numbers. They pick at the bark, apparently, seeking small insects.

I am HAPPY this one found my tree! Eat away little one![THUMBUP][HEART][THUMBUP]

Beautiful bird. I love seeing what birds come to my neighbor's feeders while I am washing dishes. It makes a yucky chore much more pleasant. [THUMBUP][HEART]
  • whereabouts said 1 years ago
Yes, the bird is beutiful and I completely understand you about the pleasant views when washing the dishes. I love looking into my backyard when I am at my kitchen sink and have always wanted to extend the window somehow to expand the view--so I can see more of the yard for even though I have a larger than normal suburban lot, I still have an abundant amounts of small wildlife. It's a treat to watch them and makes dish washing far more pleasant! [THUMBUP][HEART][THUMBUP]

We have had nuthatches, not red-breasted ones, though. They are even smaller than the chickadees.
  • whereabouts said 1 years ago
Yeah, they are small and just way too cute! [THUMBUP][HEART][HEART][THUMBUP]

Two days ago I saw outside here what looked at first to be a golden eagle. He wasn't at the bird feeder! Got the binocs and saw that thus fellow, while certainly some kind of eagle or large hawk, has a bright yellow chest. The pics of the golden eagle in my bird book don't show that. Nor does any picture match the bird I saw. Any clues?
  • whereabouts said 1 years ago
VERY interesting fr yesterday, while out there I saw what I thought to be a small eagle. It could have been a different hawk but it certainly was the not the one that visits my property on a regular basis, and the one I saw have a spot of lighter coloring on its underside.

I don't know much about eagles for I not read about them. If I see a bird that I've not noticed before, then I look it up and read about it. I want to know what my fellow earthings, those who take the time to visit me, are all about. [WINK][THUMBUP]

Look up Imperial Eagle. There are more being spotted now.
  • rlmoore said 1 years ago
Could have been a young eagle or hawk going through aphase of changing plumage. What raptors are most common in your area? This is a time of molting and such for many birds, so identification is not easy.

Sorry L not a new "species" just a new visitor to your homestead. Get them here at camp - not regularly - but enough to watch and enjoy. I'm fortunate to have tons of transient and resident flyers - Indigo buntings, Eastern townees are annual visitors b4 they fly off - several raptors - Redtail Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, Cooper's Hawk and Great Hornd Owl to name a few. Ducks up the wazoo - just saw (second year in row) a pair of Wood Ducks passing through. "I know too much info."
  • whereabouts said 1 years ago
Hey, Robert, you're cute. I'm aware that this is not a news species but it is a new species to visit my feeder. [THUMBUP]

I don't know about birds other than i love watching them. Once i almost fell off of a cliff while video taping one flitting from branch to branch when I visited the Channel Islands off the coast of Calif. I paid a little more attention to my safety after that.[WINK] Your new species is a vision. You must have a very delicous feeder[SMILE][HEART]
