My Crabapple Tree

June 1, 2007 / by whereabouts

I took the picture below late this afternoon during one of mine and Reilly's walks.  Isn't it a beautiful tree?  This is one of my two Crabapple Trees.  I love these trees though they are very, very high maintenance.  This year, both of my crabs are in need of severe pruning and branch trimming.  Crabs are weedy trees so there is a constant need for attention to keep them under control.  If you do not keep them clean and remove sucker growth, which is extensive on weedy trees such as the crabapple, it will eventually "suck" the life out of the tree and the tree will perish.  Suckers on Crabs grow not only in the ground but also on each and every branch.  I've kept my tree clean as far as I can reach but as you can see, that is not too high up off the ground (I'm only 5'1").

Anyway, homerglenexperiment not too long ago asked about trees and I gave him an estimate on the size of the crown of Crabapples for I felt it was not a good tree for the corner of a house, and in the picture I just took (below), you can see why.  The crab is currently developing it's fruit so it is heavy and weighed down.  I will perk up as the branches and newer growth begin to harden.  None-the-less, it still requires extensive pruning and I have my work cut out for me!

Dang! I love crabapples. You can bake a dish of them and serve with white hard sauce. Scrumptious!

Really? I've heard of people using them. Do you use the whole apple? iIm assuming since they are so small, you'd simply pull the stems off and bake the rest. I couldn't imagine trying to cut out the seeds on all of those! I did a post in January (I believe) about the crab tree and how the European Starlings came early this year. Each year, huge flocks of starlings come to my crab trees in the winter and devour the rotten fruit. The fruit has to be at a certain point, then they all come at once and clean the tree. It is very interesting to watch (and hear)! This year they came in January when usually they come in March. [HEART]

Beautiful tree...nice shape. It appears to be the same size as my Newport Plum tree. I still have not cut down the Plum tree as I have not made up mind on what to replace it with. The Plum tree has the sucker problem as well. The suckers pop up all over the lawn as far as twenty feet out from the trunk of the tree.

The tree also grew on angle towards the house. I don't know why the previous owners did not remove the tree. The tree was planted too close to the house and was never cared for properly.

I need to find a replacement!!!

Good luck! I love the color of the Plums, to bad your tree was planted so poorly.

I guess you know not to prune crabapple trees in their "mating season." Wait til late Fall or Winter. I speak from experience, not expertise.

When pruning is done it should be completed before early June. By mid-June to early July, flower buds for the next season are beginning to form in most crabapples. Pruning after July will reduce floral display and fruiting for the following year. [THUMBUP][HEART][THUMBUP]

Oh, hey, I forgot to ask and I am curious, what experience did you have with the tree? Maybe an article is in order? You sure seem to be in a jolly mood and that can only make for a great jolly article![THUMBUP]

I hired a guy to prune my tree. It was August. The damn thing died. End of story.

sorry to hear about your loss. [SAD] Unless he "topped" it, it is hard to understand how it died.[HUH]

Your tree is beautiful. I have only admired crabapple trees from afar. So pretty. My folks had a plum tree in the back yard and my brothers and I would climb onto the summer porch roof and eat ourselves plum silly! A great memory!

I remember crabs from my childhood too! Maybe that is why I love them so much?[HEART][THUMBUP][HEART]
