Hand Sanitizer Hazard for Children

June 6, 2007 / by whereabouts

This is true I just finished reading the Snopes page on it at Hand Sanitizer Toxins

There are two Emails being forwarded regarding the hazards of hand sanitizers with both Emails detailing what happened to their young children.  Both incidents have been verified and are true.

If you have small children, please do not keep hand sanitizer within their reach.

Email forward:

Ok. I don't know where to begin because the last 2
days of my life have been such a blur. Yesterday, My
youngest daughter Halle who is 4, was rushed to the
emergency room by her father for being severely
lethargic and incoherent. He was called to her school
by the school secretary for being "very VERY sick." He
told me that when he arrived that Halle was barely
sitting in the chair. She couldn't hold her own head
up and when he looked into her eyes, she couldn't
focus them.
He immediately called me after he scooped her up and
rushed her to the ER. When we got there, they ran
blood test after blood test and did x-rays, every test
imaginable. Her white blood cell count was normal,
nothing was out of the ordinary. The ER doctor told us
that he had done everything that he could do so he was
sending her to Saint Francis for further test.
Right when we were leaving in the ambulance, her
teacher had come to the ER and after questioning
Halle's classmates, we found out that she had licked
hand sanitizer off her hand. Hand sanitizer, of all
things. But it makes sense. These days they have all
kinds of different scents and when you have a curious
child, they are going to put all kinds of things in
their mouths.
When we arrived at Saint Francis, we told the ER
doctor there to check her blood alcohol level, which,
yes we did get weird looks from it but they did it.
The results were her blood alcohol level was 85% and
this was 6 hours after we first took her. There's no
telling what it would have been if we would have
tested it at the first ER.
Since then, her school and a few surrounding schools
have taken this out of the classrooms of all the lower
grade classes but what's to stop middle and high
schoolers too? After doing research off the internet,
we have found out that it only takes 3 squirts of the
stuff to be fatal in a toddler. For her blood alcohol
level to be so high was to compare someone her size to
drinking something 120 proof. So please PLEASE don't
disregard this because I don't ever want anyone to go
thru what my family and I have gone thru. Today was a
little better but not much. Please send this to
everyone you know that has children or are having
children. It doesn't matter what age. I just want
people to know the dangers of this.
Thank you
Lacey Butler and family

Interestingly, I never, ever, liked that stuff. It always gave me a strange feeling, not using it, just the fact that you can sanitize your hands without "water". Something about that feels terribly unnatural to me.

Our infection control nurse thought it was a good Idea...I think washing hands between patients is a better one, but then that takes time and they would have to staff us a little better to account for that...[ROLLEYES]

But it is good I found at bringing a super high fever down. I got creative one night with a patient who's temp was 105 and rising and tylenol and motrin wasn't touching it, and the cooling blanket wasn't either. One fan and smear that stuff on their legs and arms every few minutes. down to 102... Uncomfortable, probably, but so is brain fry...

Oh, boy, I recall my son being hospitalized for high fevers that lead to feberal (sp?) seizures. It was terrible! I felt soooooo bad for him. He was soooooo amazing and adorable and was such a good sport about all of it. Brings back some wonderful memories of his character and personality. [HEART][HEART]

Thanks, James. He was a true sport which is probably a big part of why he is so adored and respected by his fellow teammates (baseball and football). He is an amazing sport and as tough as nails. I recall his first shot when he was a baby and the look on his face. I cried but he did not shed a single tear or cry out. The kid is tough and has a heart of gold. [HEART][HEART][HEART]

Just keep it away from the kiddies, which I don't think you have anything to worry about. [SMILE][HEART]

I have just gotten an e-mail from a friend about this very thing, and I was just shocked when I read it. Goodness, I know people who slather the stuff around like crazy! I prefer good old soap and water, and now I'm glad I do!

Yeah, I'm not a hand sanitizer kind of person either. Soap, water, and then lotion. Actually, lotion itself is a disinfectant. [WINK]

I'll admit we use it, and at the start of school a mini-bottle goes to school with the kids. There was an issue earlier on in the school year, pending legislation about hand-washing in the schools....having to hire staff to monitor the handwashing. According to my kids and friends of theirs, their teachers do not always provide daily routine times for handwashing before lunch or snack. So, the 'purell' was a sort-of short-cut or insurance. Any hazard associated with it's use has certainly been brushed under the rug as this is the first I've heard of it. It can't taste good, I'm surprised a child would choose to lick it, but I don't know why I'm surprised, I recall when 6yo was a toddler 18 months or so and he put everything in his mouth, wood, books, pencils....I recall pulling splinters of wood out of his gums when he found one of Grandpa's pencils...ick that didn't taste good either.[TONGUE]
