OAK PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- The family of a surgeon from Florida who died after he was attacked on the streets of Oak Park last year is offering a reward to help find the suspects who caused his fatal injuries.
Doctor John Connolly was visiting his daughter when he was attacked outside of a church one year ago.
Connolly died three months later while swimming. His death was ruled a homicide because a brain injury he suffered in the attack played a role in his death. His family hopes a reward will bring new leads in the case. It was a year ago this week that retired orthopedic surgeon Connolly was brutally assaulted in Oak Park. Three months later, he drowned in a pool in his Orlando home. The medical examiner ruled that Connolly lost consciousness because of injuries he suffered in the assault.4 comments on Reward offered in murder investigation

A high school friend, Marcus McFadden, had the exact same thing happen to him when he was only 16 or 17 years old.
He was attacked by some fellow high school classmates while walking home from a friend's house in Alsip, Illinois to his own home in Robbins, Illinois. He died in the exact same manner as the Doctor, while swimming, due to a brain injury he suffered in the attack. Marcus was an extraordinary swimmer. He was a poor black boy who had a terrible studdering problem, too, and most likely that is why he was attacked.
Marcus not only was on the swim and diving teams for Alan B. Shepard High School, but he was also a fooball player and Senior year the Football team all displayed the letter "M" on their helmets in honor of Marcus.
I have alwaysed missed Marcus since first learning about what happened to him. It was a great shock to me.
I tutored Marcus for handwriting in 7th grade. We also spend a number of years in grade school and junior high before landing in the same high school. I came to adore Marcus over time and I think about him often.
I have always believed Marcus' death to be a murder. It is unfortunate that at the time, nothing was done about it.
Marcus, you are forever in my heart and mind.
I truly hope they catch these hoodlums!
I just caught my "studdering" mistake!
Marcus had a "stuttering" problem...
me too!
